Firefly Camps & Retreats

The mission of the FireFly Camps and Weekend Retreats Program is to provide opportunities throughout the year for personal development, skills building, and family respite.

FireFly Summer Camps

The summer developmental camping program provides a traditional camp experience for individuals with spina bifida and related disabilities. The program combines traditional camp fun with skill development in a barrier-free atmosphere regardless of disability. For many, it is an opportunity to be with friends and experience activities never thought possible.

A primary focus of the program is to work on teaching health care, life management, pre-vocational, and interpersonal skills. These skills are taught indirectly through goal-oriented activities such as cooking, art, sports, nature, archery, swimming, and discussion groups. Each summer program has a specific theme with targeted goals and objectives. Personalized goal plans are also created for each participant. The individual does not need to be independent in self care routines to participate. Groups are determined based on age and interests.

Camps We Offer

Adult Camp: for adults (ages 21+) with spina bifida or a related disability

Youth/Teen Camp: for youth, teens, and young adults (ages 6-21).

Mini Day Camp: children (ages 2 to 5), along with their parent(s) and sibling(s). Focus is on becoming acquainted with the camp and making friends.

Weekend Retreats are an extension of the FireFly Summer Camp Program. Weekend Retreats enable participants to get together with friends throughout the year. The emphasis of the program is on developing and maintaining friendships. Groups are based on age.

Camp Guyasuta –Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions about Camp Guyasuta. If you have any other questions, please contact Sue Garver at the office (724) 934-9600 or via email

Does my child need to be able to catheterize independently to attend programs?

No. If your child is unable to self-cath our staff will do this for them and work with them on finding ways to help make them more independent in this area. Sometimes, we even have kids leave camp doing this for themselves!

My child has a bowel program… how does that work at camp?

During the weekend retreats we do not do bowel routines due to time constraints. However, in the summer time we have time set aside in the schedule called siesta every afternoon in which these routines are completed.

What type of staff are working with my child and how are they trained?

The counselors are primarily college level staff. They are trained in all aspects of personal care from showering and dressing to cathing and performing bowel routines by the Association staff. Also, there is an Association staff member on site during care times to assist as necessary.

My child takes medications, how are these administered?

For weekend retreats we ask that you bring all medications pre-dosed in either a pill container or med bags. The staff will them administer these medications at the appropriate time. In the summer we will send out medication bags to you so that you can mark and fill them before coming to camp, however, we still ask that you bring the original pill bottles with you as well.

Can my child call home or can I call them while they are at camp?

We do not recommend that parents speak with their children while they are at camp, as often times this increases or causes homesickness. We will be happy to take your call and tell you how they are doing and of course we will always call you if we have any questions. You can also send us emails which we will be happy to give to your child and of course campers are always happy to get letters from home.

Who will be distributing the medications?

Similar to all the retreats in the past, campers are to bring their medications pre-dosed and the counselors will distribute the medications at the proper times.

My son/daughter has a power chair how will it be charged at night?

There are electrical outlets on both floors of the buildings, we will be able to charge everyone’s chair.

Is there air conditioning?

Yes, the floors are air conditioned.

How will I be able to contact someone when my son/daughter is attending the retreats?

Firefly camps and retreats has it’s own number, the leadership will have this phone with them at all times during the retreat. The phone number is (724) 841-9280. This number should be used by families and ACCESS transportation to contact staff.

Hiring Process

  1. What does Firefly Camps and Retreats look for when hiring counselors? Each year we hire a diverse staff who, with their personalities, backgrounds and talents, can serve as positive role models for our campers, teach the different activities offered at camp, and offer real enthusiasm for camp life. We look for staff members who want to join our camp community, make many new friends, and work hard to benefit the individuals who attend camp.
  2. How old do you have to be to work at Firefly Camps and Retreats? Counselors must be 18 years of age and have completed one year of college or equivalent experience.
  3. Do I have to have previous experience working at a camp to apply to work at Firefly Camps and Retreat? No, we encourage anyone who has had experience working with children and adults with disabilities and loves the outdoors to apply to work at Firefly Camps and Retreats. Each summer we have many returning counselors, but we also have almost the same number of new ones who bring their own wonderful energy and experiences to our program.
  4. How many staff members are hired each summer? Each summer we hire about 30 staff to work at camp. In addition to the counselors, we also hire other nurses and program staff each summer.
  5. What are the campers at Firefly Camps and Retreats like? Our campers range from ages 6-adult. They are divided into two groups: Adults (21 and up) and Youth/Teen (6-21). Our campers have spina bifida and related disabilities so counselors must be willing and able to lift and provide personal care.
  6. What is the salary for a Firefly Camps and Retreats counselor? The starting salary for a cabin counselor at Firefly Camps and Retreats is competitive with other camps in our area. The base salary can increase according to your age, education, responsibilities, skills, and experience. A great perk to working at camp is that your room and board are included during the time you work, so you can really save a lot of money during the summer.
  7. When do counselors get paid? Staff members are paid at the end of their contracted work period.
  8. Do counselors have to work all summer? We prefer to hire counselors who can work all of our sessions (training, adult week, and youth/teen week).
  9. What is the interview/hiring process like for counselors? As soon as we receive your application and reference letters, we will call you to set up an interview. While we prefer in-person interviews, we often conduct interviews over the phone. We hope the interview helps us get to know you, but also helps you learn more about Firefly Camps and Retreats. We really want to answer all your questions!
  10. Am I right for Firefly Camps and Retreats? Are you a high energy person who likes to stay busy? Are you outgoing and friendly? Do you find it easy and enjoyable to be with children and adults? Are you comfortable in a rustic, outdoor setting? Are you a little bit goofy or silly at heart? If so, then you will fit right in at Firefly Camps and Retreats and absolutely love it.
